review 1: A good one in the charles Lenox series. I enjoyed this one because its setting was so different than the last 4 - a ship in Her majesty's Navy. Lenox is sent to Egypt by Parliament ostensibly to negotiate British interests in the newly-constructed suez Canal. Secretly he is also charged to look into the reasons that 5 British spies have been unmasked and murdered recently. All of this takes place in the last 3 chapters. The bulk of the book concerns the murders of 2 officers on the vessel on which he is sailing. I thoroughly enjoyed the details about the British Navy in the second half of the 19th Century. The author did not play up the less savory elements (altho' it was mentioned several times that seamen could be flogged for infractions) but he did include detail... mores that were new to me - that officers each their own stewards (effectively their own valets/servants/butlers) and that the midshipmen (officer candidates onboard to learn the art and science of commanding a sailing ship) were as young as 14 and were allowed to drink alcohol and smoke.
review 2: Charles Lenox Mystery Series book #5. Jump a head about 3 years since the last book, Charles has to go to Egypt on Parliament business. He's taking a ship from London to Africa to visit the Suez canal. He is also on a covert mission for his brother. While he is aboard ship one of the crew is murdered. The captain knows that Lenox has done some detective work before joining the Parliament and asks him to help find out who the killer is. Meanwhile Lenox's wife Lady Jane waits at him and is due to have their first child in about 4 months. less
