review 1: I haven't read a Spider-Man comic in a long time and this is the newest flagship title for Spider-Man, but I wasn't lost while reading it because this is the beginning of the story-arc. All you have to know is *SPOILER* Peter Parker is dead. Ok, dry those tears, he's technically still alive but his mind has been replaced with Dr. Otto Octavius's, who now has to adjust to life as a superhero, instead of the evil supervillain life he enjoyed as Doc Oc. I found this to be a compelling story and the writing is often witty and engaging, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. And don't worry, there is a glimmer of hope that Peter Parker will come back, but I won't spoil anything else for you.-Louis M.

... moreme travel never works in fictional stories (usually ending badly) and in the same way books which have to tie in or relate to whatever major comic event is happening (usually) end up being rather bad. At DC the "Death of the Family" event wreaked havoc on Gail Simone's Batgirl storyline (unless she planned a fragmented mess), "Rotworld" ruined Animal Man by making the book everything that it was trying to undermine and over at Marvel the "Age of Ultron" turned Mark Waid's Indestructible Hulk series into a big pile of rubbish. I am happy to say that Superior Spider-man Vol. 4 does not fall to the depths of these other books but at the same time the first three issues which re-introduce Spider-man 2099 (y'know, Spidey from the year 2099) detract from the themes developed over the last 3 volumes. This could've been called "Superior Spider-man: Sidequest" since the major purpose of the book is to tie it in to the other Marvel books. One could make the argument that the 2099 storyline was needed to free Otto up so he can get out on his own - but the tension between him and his workmates was already at the boiling point and the way the story was pulled off appeared largely out of context with the series in general. The second half of the book somehow ended up being more boring and redundant by basically just filling in as setup for future stories because all that really happens are extensions of things that were already happening anyway (Anna and Otto go out, Otto goes and finishes school, Otto tries to be more self-sufficient, the Green Goblin is still underground, blah, blah). Everything that happens was already happening - it's as if only the bare bones of the story were being presented to appear to push the narrative forward while still holding it firmly in place. Ryan Stegman is back on art duty for the first half of the book and his work is still great (the way that the rips in time start to eat away the images as the story unfolds are a nice touch but could have been exaggerated more). Giuseppe Camuncoli pencils the last two issues and his style fits the story better than Ramos' work in the last volume by avoiding excessive cartoonishness but it isn't particularly groundbreaking since it appears as most other standard fare comic illustration. The dialogue and art is still above average but the momentum and cohesiveness of the series has encountered a large hiccup by conforming to the Age of Ultron event's narrative consequences. This is the first Superior Spider-man volume that completely failed to win me over. less
