review 1: The narrator of this second book in David Michie’s The Dalai Lama’s Cat series, is HHC, His Holiness’ Cat. His Holiness is the Dalai Lama, and the cat is Snow Lion to His Holiness, Rapoche to her friends at the Himalaya Book Cafe, and Swami when she’s at the Downward Dog Yoga Studio. When His Holiness tells Snow Lion he must leave for a couple of months, he gives HHC an assignment: to discover what makes her purr. Each event in the following two months, leads Snow Lion to revelations, including the dangers of self-obsession after being chased by slavering Golden Retrievers to an encounter with a highly respected Yogi that leads Snow Lion to a break through discovery about her past. Because HHC is welcome wherever she goes, she is able to listen to the wisdom of monk... mores, book sellers, and yoga masters. In the end, HHC comes to understand that, yes, she purrs because she’s happy, but there are many more reasons, too. This small book was a big surprise. I’m not sure what I expected when I chose it, but I found wisdom in the midst of a most interesting novel set in McLeod Ganj, a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas. Michie’s characters, including HHC, are well drawn and the reader comes to like them all. The novel has several twists and turns that allows Michie to impart Buddhist precepts with subtlety without being preachy or, indeed, the reader even initially realizing the author’s intent. This will be one of those books that you’ll want to give as a gift to your friends and family - even those who say they have no interest in Buddhism and no intention of learning about it.
review 2: The Dalai Lama's cat has become such a firm favourite of mine that I was unsure how the author could match it in this sequel - I was wrong, this is every bit as good as the first. Focussing on the art of happiness, this book manages to effortlessly communicate some important principles. Once again the story is captivating and allows the reader to absorb the learning without feeling preached to. I hope there will be a third installment! less
