review 1: I think this book was much better than my rating, but translated from Afrikaans I found some of it disconcerting. Every person is described over and over as black, white, or colored. That was odd. It dragged for me in the middle, but I read the end and then worked my way back quite far. Also there were two cases ongoing simultaneously and that was confusing. Also enjoyed the Rachel story, but not Alexa's.
review 2: I approached this book with that snobby feeling that local is actually not 'lekker' and was pleasantly surprised. This was my first ever Deon Meyer book and most definitely won't be my last. I loved the Audible rendition, the familiar local accents and the varied unique characters. The dark and light, rough and smooth contrasts mirrored the pace of
... morethe book. 'I felt motivated to grab my earphones at every opportunity. The opinions on government policies and current affairs through the mouths of the characters are realistic and topical. Events, like ill befalling a tourist seemed to mirror real life happenings. After completing the read I remain amused by the Police Woman and her appetite for KFC. Most enjoyable and entertaining in all respects less
