review 1: Deon Meyer's novels amaze me. They not only contain gripping mysteries with a huge cast of characters, but they also teach so much about South Africa, its race relations, and government sectors. Thisbook was a knockout mystery. So many twists and turns and wrong alleys and red herrings. I was clueless as to who the murderer was until about a page before the criminal was outed. My mark of a good book.
review 2: This is so much more than just a crime novel; it also gives a glimpse of South African society in the present time. I enjoyed the wide variety of interesting and realistic characters and all the interactions between them. Meyer is very successful at showing the animosities between the different race groups, who in spite of their prejudices and disl... moreikes try so hard to cooperate and get along with each other. I love the way he alternates between Afrikaans and English; reflecting the way South Africans really speak to each other. less
