review 1: Definitely not as good as he other novels I've read. It was a little more cheesy and silly*, especially the first half. I was pleasantly surprised to find the novel picking up steam and becoming a little more plausible (perhaps less outright ridiculous is a better term) and I was able to enjoy it more without shaking my head from time to time with a bemused smile. *Yes, I am aware ALL of these books are completely unbelievable and not in any way reality based. I don't care, I still enjoy the ride most of the time. Even I have my limits ("Well now, I can believe the hero singlehandedly defused the nuclear bomb with no previous training, but come on, being rescued by a lost tribe of vikings?")

... moreut I knew that going in. Everything feels rushed and the characters are two dimensional at best. And the plot... the plot doesn't just border on the absurd, it wandered in and annexed it like it was Putin. While I feel hard pressed to say I enjoyed Gideon's Sword, I have to admit that I didn't not enjoy it. If, like me, you've got yourself a waterproof e-reader and enjoy idiotic escapist fiction in the bathtub, this might not be a bad choice. For all its faults, this book is actually a lot more readable than a lot of books in its class. less
