review 1: Fatale introduces Josephine, "Jo", a mysterious femme fatale, who has ties to a satanic (I think?) cult. As far as the first volume discloses, she is immortal and doesn't age. It's a noir/horror comic. The narrative switches between San Francisco in the 1930s and present day. Fatale reads like a mashup of Chandler and Lovecraft. The main plotline focuses on Jo's lover, Walter, a crooked cop who is slowly dying, and the involvement of a strange cult. Of course, Jo seeks the aid of another man to help her, but she is rather capable of protecting herself. There are plenty of dead bodies and guts, but nothing too over the top, at least for me.The drawing style isn't as crisp as I would have preferred, but I got used to it over time and I think it suits the story's dark mood. Mo... morest of the panels are very dark in color - lots of black - even in scenes when the characters are outside in the daytime. I would have liked some more push on the horror elements, as noir can easily become the same old dirty cop and the mob story over and over again.
review 2: These two have quietly been producing some of the greatest comics of the last ten years. Brubaker writes noir/crime stories often with a supernatural twist and Phillips’ art compliments him wonderfully. Their latest series, Fatale, blends classic crime with the occult and it may turn out to be their best collaboration yet. The series sprawls across time and amasses an impressive cast of characters; however, the series centers on a cursed woman named Jo and the violent cultists trying to find her. The first two collections are available now and there will be a total of 4-5 when it concludes. Brubaker has said he has an ending in sight but continues to get more ideas, so pick it up today because it could expand more if the sales remain strong! less

I really liked this but giving anything five stars gives me anxiety, so four it is

This book didn't really seem to go anywhere and was very disjointed and confused.

Noir meets horror, cult meets classic, beauty meets beast. I need more!

Noir, Lovecraft, occult, all in one comic! What's not to love?
