review 1: This is my first Wilson read; it is pretty damn good considering he's a biologist and naturalist. As Margaret Atwood said, this book is "a lyrical hymn to the wonders of earth. . . An Illiad of the ants." He also draws a thought-provoking comparison to human and ant societies. This book leaves the reader with much to think about. I have The Meaning of Human Existence by Wilson in my stack--looking forward to reading it all the more now that I've experienced The Anthill! Plan to also read The Ants and The Naturalist--both by Wilson and Pulitzer Prize winners--I've heard they are both excellent.
review 2: Oh, E.O.I love your non-fiction writing. I love how much you love ants. I love your extensive vocabulary. I so wanted to love your fiction. The middle part about
... more the ants themselves: that part gets 5 stars, no question. Great writing. Perfect illustration of the tenuous nature of evolutionary advantage. Totally your wheelhouse. The rest of it is a little stilted and weird. I get the ant analogies, but parts of it dragged on in unpleasant ways. So, 5 stars for ants, and 3 stars for the rest. less
