review 1: A Medal for Murder was the second in the Kate Shackleton historical mystery series. It takes place in Britain, in the 1920's. A well crafted novel, with plenty of grit and some humor. The characters talked and acted in a manner that felt realistic. There has been some comparison of Kate to Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs. While there are some circumstantial similarities, Kate is written to be far less formal than Maisie. The mystery portion also is written more smoothly and subtly than in the Maisie novels I have read. In the end, this story was enjoyable and an easy but diverting read.
review 2: Kate Shackleton and her assistant, Jim Sykes, are on the trail of a mysterious pawnshop thief who has made off with precious jewelry. Kate heads to Harrogate to be
... moregin notifying the victims of the robbery that the pawnshop owner, Mr. Moony, will make restitution. While there, she becomes immersed in a murder investigation as well as a missing-person inquiry. The story is fairly compelling but it can be difficult to follow; Brody attempts to tell the tales of several main characters and goes backwards and forwards in time in a less than orderly manner. Kate's foray into romance seems sudden especially since in the first book of her adventures she is grieving so strongly for her husband, missing in action and in all probability, dead--but Kate can't get herself to believe it. Gerald is mentioned only once or twice in this second installment. Brody does a nice job with period details and her characters are well portrayed. Entertaining, overall. less

Second in the series. Interesting protagonist. Worth the read for historical mystery fans.
