review 1: The book sets up a clear and plausible vision of the near future, full of terrorism and human misery and decadent distractions. And then the plot seems to go nowhere but into a tedious recounting of the main character's odd jobs and adolescent sexual angst. I wasn't even sure what the point was: A study of modern terrorist motives? A criticism of American apathy? A cautionary tale about volcanoes?
review 2: Too much telling and not enough showing. The main character is a blue-color youth cliche and never leaves this status to become a real character because Pohl uses him to narrate through all the geopolitical history. Both unrealistic and unnecessary because most of the near future concepts described would not be new to any casual science fiction reader
... moreand so therefore do not require so much explication. Throwing in a dash of callus ignorance every fifth paragraph and the occasional bit of blue collar slang does not make the character blue collar. less

I enjoyed a goodly amount of the story, but he needed a good editor to knock it down to size.
