review 1: This was better than Carriger's first YA. I'm hopeful for the next one. I read the first of the Parasol Protectorate series on assignment several years ago and fell in love with Carriger's wit. After reading all of that first series I was looking forward to what she would do next and was quite disappointed with her first YA title in the Finishing School series. She may be right subtle wit may be over the heads of today's teens but I certainly loved it when I was a teenager-Vanity Fair being my favorite book in high school-hadn't yet discovered Jane Austen. This was a fun romp and entertaining. Still not up to the expectations set by her first adult series.
review 2: Another fun adventure of Miss Geraldine's Finishing School girls. I enjoyed seeing the relations
... morehips between the girls start to grow and shift, and it was fun to see a bit of flirting with the boys. Soap has won over my heart. Bless him. I also appreciated that as Sophronia began to use and implement the darker aspects of espionage, like character assassination, she came to realize that these things have large consequences and can lead to people being hurt or killed. This realization came at the right time. She's still eager and learning, but she's also being more cautious and thinking about actions and reactions. Good growing up fodder. Looking forward to book #3! less
