Finishing School
review 1: Such a fun read! We meet Sophronia as she uses the dumbwaiter to spy on her mother's meeting with a busybody neighbor. Sophronia is worried they will make some major life decisions for her without consulting her. The result is a crashing success, with trifle everywhere and Sophronia packed off to a finishing school (for young lady spies). The school is a floating dirigible and Queen Victoria is in power. The vampire and werewolf factions have sworn allegiance, but treachery abounds. This book was similar in style and heroine to the Flavia de Luce series, another of my favorites.
review 2: Paranormal steampunk adventures, continued. Sophronia Temminnick is a new student at Ms. Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. That's the kind of fini
... moreshing academy where they teach the students how to leave people...finished. They have lessons on how to create floral centerpieces that can double for poisoning the guests.I was uneasy at first about a steam-powered dirigible school -- the coal and water is almost certainly much too heavy for the thing to get airborne. And then I realized that it's silly to quibble about engineering in a novel with werewolves and vampires. The characters are fun, the author is good at gently hinting at more than the characters perceive, and I found that this very much held my interest despite being nominally pitched at younger readers. less

I picked this up a few days ago at the Scholastic Warehouse Sale when I was getting some stuff for my girl. But I started reading this immediately to see if it might also be good for my daughter. I've read the Parasol Protectorate series and liked it pretty well. I'm happy to say that I enjoyed this one too! I'm not sure if my girl will be into it, but I'm definitely recommending it to her. We're at a weird stage now where her reading level doesn't match the reading level of her interests. In fact, THIS one is only on a 5th grade level. She happens to be in 5th grade and the bottom level of her range is always her actual grade, so she can still read it for AR. I think she might like it, but I guess we'll see.

Ah, finishing school. That noble institution where young girls may go to become ladies of quality. With lessons in knife fighting from werewolves, etiquette from vampires, and observation from actresses, a girl can get quite an education indeed. As adventure packed as the Parasol Protectorate series, though clearly geared for younger readers, these books continue expanding that wonderful world of Victorian fashion, steam-powered ingenuity, and supernatural science. I'd highly recommend this title for young adult readers or fan of the steam-punk genre.
