review 2: Envy takes place in a town called Port Gample, Washington. As the story begins the setting seems just like a normal town, with nothing really special about it in particular. In the beginning, the body of fifteen year old Katelyn Berkley is d
... moreiscovered in a bathtub. She died of electrocution from an espresso machine, and since the people didn’t know whether if it was a suicide or an accident, her death was ruled as accidental. Her death was always seen as strange since suicide by electrocution was always a peculiar choice, though it wasn’t until Katelyn’s friends, twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan develop some doubts as to whether or not it was really an accident, that the true investigation begins. Throughout the book it seems that the twins have some sort of insight that allows them to see the truth through their dreams, getting them to slowly uncover the secrets of Katelyn’s mysterious death. The development of the theme is quite direct, we know that this is a crime novel from the beginning when we see Katelyn’s death and the twins attempting to investigate it. I was a little confused as to Hayley and Taylor ‘supernatural powers’ to see some hints about the mystery in their dreams, and that was never really explained. I really liked how the green nail polish that Katelyn wore before she died came into the title of ‘Envy’ and the design of the book cover. The ending really gave us an unexpected twist, though towards the end there were many ways that the plot could’ve went and gave the reader some space for our imagination to roam. In my opinion, one of the most memorable quotes of this book was “He always told his girl, ‘If only these walls could talk... the world would know just how hard it is to tell the truth in a story in which everyone's a liar,’ but the walls didn't talk.” This quote evokes a lot of thought into the story as who which characters the reader chooses to believe. The characters involved in this book make quite a lot of claims about Katelyn, and to some extent, it’s the reader who has to make a decision as to who to trust, just like what Hayley and Taylor had to do. I thought the book got into the main interesting storyline quite slowly. Though the language is suitable for a wide range of age groups, the story doesn’t start getting very interesting until almost the middle. I would recommend this book, though readers would have to have a slight patience with the plot. The theme of the book would be YA fiction and crime, and the quality of the writing is effective. less
