review 1: Imaginative. I liked the mythology, the basic story, a lot of the monsters and Escher-like setting. I wish I had liked Melanie a bit more. She read awful young to me, and I think I might have actually liked her better if she'd been around 8 or 9 instead of 14. And I struggled a little with some of the writing, how certain things were phrased, exclamation marks, etc. I did like Mrs. Wei a lot, though. And I think this could be a spectacular animated film.
review 2: I love this book. It's one that I wish my 14 year old self had been given. It's an exceptional and interesting YA fantasy. ... more need for explanation. Beautiful. Looking forward to picking up the subsequent ones in the series and sharing with YA readers in my life. less

If Miyasaki met Gaiman they would birth this book. This would make an excellent animated movie.
