review 1: This was a very hard book for me to like. It has everything that should appeal; alternate history, a large dollop of science fiction *and* fantasy. However, I kept putting it down, and wishing I liked the characters more. I suspect my uneven reading pattern made the uneven narrative that much more evident, but the story seemed to move along in fits and starts, and I never felt I got real insight into the characters or their development. The story us intriguing enough that I might yet pick up the next one to see what happens - but maybe not.
review 2: the story concept is great! Loved it! the perfect ammount WWII steampunk / fantasy to draw you completely into the story and love being there. would make a fabulous movie! the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars i
... mores the storyline's climax and conclusion after all the intrigue just fell a little flat. relied on an action sequence that was just confusing and then wrapped up with so many questions about the German characters after there had been posed so many questions and attempts to infiltrate. just fell wanting and not in a good way...even though there are more books in the series it's obvious they go on to completely other things...anyways fun read! less
