review 1: This is the third part of a trilogy (Bitter Seeds, Coldest War, Necessary Evil), I'm going to post the same review for all as I think they make for an excellent set. Without question one of the most satisfying reads in a long while. I loved the execution of the initial conceit — Nazi super soldier X-Men types vs. a UK unit of black magic wizards. But what was even more exciting was the twists and introduction of another conceit that I wasn't expecting at all — but in looking back the author cleverly, completely set everything in place for it, how it nicely reverses and expands certain elements in the sequel, and sets everything up for a great finish, with moments of triumph, sadness, bittersweetness, etc. There's many enjoyable opportunities to chew over sci-tech, alte... morernate history, and thoughtful character that play out in different, enriched lights across the volumes. One of my favorite reads in the last five years, and one I am quick to put forward whenever someone asks for something to crack the cover on. (Or power up, as the e-book case may be!)
review 2: I've said this before, this series creeps me out. But I really enjoy these books... like a moth drawn to a flame... Less about the monsters, "Necessary Evil" focuses on Raybould's attempt to set things right by altering the timeline. Very interesting, given that I read Stross's "Singularity Sky" before this book. A good solid story and good end to the series. I will read more books written by Ian Treglellis. less
