review 1: Something about this book captured me quite a bit more than the previous two of the Milkweed series. Starting the first chapter of the book from a completely different perspective, one we were tempted to imagine in previous books but never explicitly saw, was a fantastic idea.I started reading this with the mindset "Well, I read the first two, might as well finish the trilogy" and ended up enjoying it by far the most of the three. Why not 5 stars? The book started on such a high note, really exploring some characters in depth not previously seen. It ENDED in an overly simplistic and brutish way. I really hope there's more to this series, I enjoy the universe AND want something just slightly more satisfying to replace this ending.Good overall though, a series worth readi... moreng :)
review 2: Necessary Evil is a very satisfying end to Ian Tregillis’ Milkweed trilogy. Small spoilers below if you have not read the first two books. In an alternate WWII, the Nazis developed super humans (telekinetic, seers, pyrokinetics) and would have won the war except Britain opted to gather warlocks who negotiated with Cthulhu like beings to first stalemate and then eventually help defeat the Nazis. More than 20 years later this leads to a Cold War between Soviet super humans (they salvaged the Nazis work) and Britain. The end result: the end of the world. To avoid this an alliance of Will, a warlock, Marsh, a surviving Milkweed operative, and a Nazi seer arrange to send Marsh back in time to try to prevent the end of the world from ever happening. The plan is to destroy the Nazi operation and keep Britain from enlisting the warlocks. Tregillis keeps the action plausible, but what did stick with me was a review that said this is very much a love story. Well, it is a love story that affects the entire world. A story that is well executed and I believe will hold most reader’s interest.I feel I should divulge a bias of mine here. While I enjoy comics, I tend to avoid super hero novels. I am quite glad that I dumped that bias for this series, and I hope to pick up Tregillis’ new novel soon (there is the TBR pile to be worked on). less
