review 1: Great novella. I have only one complaint: Magic Gifts was a bonus story in Gunmetal Magic and was placed AFTER Andrea's story. However: Magic Gifts is story #5.4 in the Kate Daniels universe, Gunmetal Magic is #5.5. No wonder I didn't recognize Håkon the draugr when I read about him in Andrea's story, because Kate first met him in the novella that should have been placed at the beginning of the book. Why was there no mention of correct reading order at the beginning of this book? *annoyed grimace*. As I've already mentioned, the novella was fast paced, fun and had an interesting storyline. It's been a while since I visited Atlanta, the Beast lord and his consort. As usual, there's no rest for the wicked... Or Kate and Curran. Not only is Kate handling (or shirking) guild ... moreresponsibilities, but also researching a golden necklace that's already killed a journeywoman and is now slowly strangling a young boy to death. The quest to know the truth, leads them to brawling Vikings, mythological creatures from Norway, and Ghastek the arrogant comes along for the ride. (You should have focused on the Northern lights, instead of Norwegian cemeteries, dude, then perhaps you would've enjoyed your stay more, hrmpf...) all in all, this was an amazingly well rounded story, considering it was only 100 pages long. Extra points for a well researched story. Anyone who has read my 3 or 4 reviews where Scandinavian culture's been involved will probably remember how much I've bitched and moaned about authors who've gotten their facts wrong and misspelled words. Not so here, this was a prime example of why research beyond some basic googling is a good idea. Kudos, Ilona Andrews, your high ratings are well deserved.
review 2: A little novella telling Kate's side of the story that is referenced in Andrea's spin off. I never have high expectations for novellas, but I liked that this one was a complete story instead of just a few scenes featuring the characters. It also developed a storyline that will no doubt be featured in the next book so I'm glad I read it. One annoying thing...I don't like how these people win every fight they ever participate in, it takes away the suspense. I need them to get their asses kicked every now and again. Kate is understandable given her lineage, but Curran's just an alpha? He shouldn't be able to take the same damage she does. That annoyance aside, a nice little side story with Kate and the gang. less
