review 1: What a delight to meet a new author of English mysteries. This is Imogen Robertson's debut novel, full of Dickinsonian type characters. Harriet Westerman is a most decidedly uncommon woman for 1780 England; actually, she would be uncommon even today. While her husband is sailing for England in the turbulent time of the American Colonies revolution, she is holding down the manor in Sussex with her two small children and younger sister. When she finds a dead body during a morning walk, she turns to Gabriel Crowther, a reclusive scientist known to study human anatomy via dead bodies. From there, we meet the Thornleighs and watch as Mrs. Westerman and Crowther unravel their heinous secrets. The story crosses the ocean into the early days of the Revolution, looking at it fr... moreom the English point of view. I loved it and am excited to start the second book, which continues the adventures of these two unlikely but likable sleuths.
review 2: The first in a historical mystery series set in Georgian England, one of my all-time favorite time periods. It's sort of CSI meets Elizabeth Bennet. I enjoyed the book, although definitely felt it was a "first novel," so I'm looking forward to seeing how the characters develop. Others who have read it complained of the multiple points of view, which really didn't bother me as much--I'm used to reading stuff like that, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the American Revolution from the other side! ;-) less
