review 1: I had not heard of this book but came across it when I was searching for James Frey’s latest novel. I had enjoyed both previous books so decided to read it, knowing that it would be controversial given the subject matter - what if Christ came back to earth today...in NYC. First let me say that the packaging on this book is VERY clever. It looks like a Bible. Same texture cover, silver edged pages, no dedication or acknowledgments or inside cover summary of the book. All of Ben’s words are printed in red and the font is very much like you would find in a Bible. I found the beginning interesting but my attention soon waned to where towards the end, I just was skimming. A bit of a let down but with this author it is not uncommon to expect the unexpect... moreed.
review 2: This novel moves fast, which is something I really like. It tells the story as though it were the final testament, with the "messiah's" words listed in red as they are in many bibles. It's a study of religion, and it rips it down by not removing to foundation brick by brick, but by breaking down walls. The messiah is an extremely liberal Jesus. I mean there's a lot of sex and orgies. Not gratuitously, or in pornographic detail, but you're definitely desensitized to chastity by the end. I guess that's one of my critiques, though I agree that sex should be "free" it is definitely glorified to another level in this book. As if we should all just be sexually involved in whoever for "love's" sake, never mentioning the possibility even, for negative consequence. However, the book was a joy to read. Coming from a religious background myself it was a joy to watch someone so specifically critique and tear down the establishment. If you don't want your religious assumptions questioned, don't read it. If you don't like cursing and fornication, stay away. If you want a fresh look at what a modern-day Jesus might think, give it a try, I plowed through this book pretty quickly and enjoyed it thoroughly. less

Controversial. Illicit. Overtly religious. Sexually deviant. This has truly been one of the most intriguing books I have read in some time. I myself was not sold on the writing style of 'A Million Little Pieces', and I am still not convinced Frey is a great writer. But there is definitely something within the way he tells his tales and his sincere & moving examination of the nature of spirituality that captures you and propels you through this book. 'The Final Testament' is a strong and absorbing piece of writing.
