review 1: GoodReads recommended I give this book a try and despite the hideous cover, I decided to give it a whirl. I'm glad I did. It was robbed in the cover art department. Frost has definitely given a lot of thought to this world and the characters. Perfect mixture of action, paranormal, and hot vampires. Also, a lead vampire who doesn't make me cringe with warning signs? Can't remember the last time that happened. Spade is just the right mixture of chivalry and danger.
review 2: This is a meaningless summer read and no more. The backstory is told like that annoying distant relative who name drops as if you are supposed to know who in the world Carol is. It was so bad that at one point I had to double check to make sure I hadn't started with book #2 in the series. The
... more relationship play between Spade and Denise seems more like something you would expect from insecure teenagers with a flare for drama than a 150 year old creature and a grown woman. Another thing that is really annoying is that the author would switch the narrative point of view almost randomly. One sentence it would from the viewpoint of Spade then...oops! It's now Denise. Or is it Spade? Oh, one last annoying thing. The vampire mythology is really poorly explained and seems crafted through a combination of a need for a plot device and an arbitrary desire to do something unexpected. Why is an aversion to garlic so silly but vampires having individualized super powers so obvious to just drop Into the story without flinching. The only thing that keeps it from being a single star and my ditching it is that the story flows well. It's often predictable but has some engaging qualities....some.... I will not be reading Book #2. less
