review 1: This is the final installment of Jeff Lemire's "Sweet Tooth," a post-apocalyptic quest to discover the origin of the disease that ended humanity. The previous 5 installments left many questions unanswered, so I was happy that Lemire spent time addressing the central story lines rather than the subplots. I was very happy with the series in general and this book in particular, and the longer I spent with Lemire the more I realized his talent for using paneling and coloring to create parallels between stories. He's one of the best in the game right now, basically.
review 2: I had mixed feelings about this one when I read the first volume, and I almost walked away from the series. But when I decided to give the second volume a chance, I found that the story became ... moremuch more compelling. Now that I've finished the entire series, I feel like this story of human/animal hybrid children has a lot to say about what it means to be human and what some of our strengths and weaknesses as a species are. There's a lovely mythology here that I ended up really enjoying, and a sweet tale of love, devotion, sacrifice and redemption. less
