review 1: I did not like this one as well as Annihilation. I thought it was dry, in comparison to the richness of description that Area X and its effects offered. It was almost... boring. But when it does go to hell, does. it. ever. Mundane bureaucracy and office politics are the perfect plot disguise. And I do have to hand it to this book: from the moment he introduces himself to the point where he jumps, Control gets at least twice as much characterization as the Biologist ever did.
review 2: Hmmm, I don't know if I'm just getting more finicky the older I get but I wasn't really satisfied with this one. I really liked the first in the Southern Reach Trilogy but this one felt a little unnecessary. They moved some of the mysteries forward but only after a several hundre... mored page slog in between. I'm still going to read the last one but I hope it lives up to the promise of the first, because this one certainly didn't. Sometimes with a book that has a "mysterious element" to it I feel like the author has to drag it out as long as possible to make it into a three part book series, instead of just getting it all out in one, but hopefully the last piece is all killer no filler. less
