review 1: Annihilation is a sparse, haunting read by Jeff Vandermeer. The protagonist is so anti-social and wrapped up in her head she is a somewhat unknowable and unreliable narrator. Just as Area X is an unknowable space outside (?) the border of The Southern Reach. This novel reminds me of the T.V. Show Lost in so many ways but the ending of the novel is satisfactory and could stand alone despite being # 1 of a trilogy. I very much enjoyed this book and the creepy feeling it gave me when I read it at night.
review 2: I really liked this book. It was just haunting. With its ecological themes and unfolding mystery it reminded me a lot of the Karen Traviss Wess'har series - one of my very favorites. I think this is really for a mature audience, not because of sex or go
... morere but because of subleties and nuances. It takes a bit of life experience to fully appreciate it. I will continue with the rest of the series when the prices drop a little, but I feel this actually works just fine as a stand alone, even with all the open questions. less
