review 1: Really enjoyed the story. Ms. Ashley is one of my favorite authors, however, it seems a certain theme is centered around her books. I gave this book a four star because it started out great like a real christmas romance, family story. Then it shifted into a blackmailing/ mystery story. I think this would have been a good boy gets girl story without the blackmailing plot. And as much as I love Ian Mackenzie, I felt his comments were out of place in this story, or maybe I am wrong and Ian is beginning to open up (fit in) among others. I guess with so many books within the series a character's personality should grow. The story was good, however, I loss my interest in the book when it shifted into a mystery. Will read again.
review 2: This installment of in “The
... moreMacKenzie’s and The McBride’s” series tells Sinclair McBride and Roberta Frasier’s story. And what an excellent story it is!!Sinclair McBride is a barrister better known as Basher McBride. He known and feared by the criminal element in London for his success in prosecuting criminals. Bertie is a pickpocket, who is trying to get away from a life of crime forced on her by her father. After their first interesting meeting when Bertie picks Sinclair’s pocket, their relationship forms when Bertie is made Governess to Sinclair’s children, Cat and Andrew. The sparks fly between these two from their very first look at each other. Sinclair tries to fight the feeling, but Bertie is a strong willed persistent lady and soon wins him over. I also think her quick and obvious understanding and love for his children plays a huge part in winning him.I loved Bertie’s straightforward way of speaking and her ability to see beauty in everything, especially when her life so far should have beaten the joy from her. She is charming, funny and has such ability to love and accept people as they are. I believe Bertie to be one of the best heroine’s in this series. While Sinclair is a man with demons of his own and works waaay too much, he obviously adores his children and only wants to do what’s best for them. He hasn’t gotten over the loss of his wife and that pain is eating away at his soul. Bertie’s unconventional arrival in his life comes at the perfect time. As with the other books in the series, I ADORED this book. I swear everything that Jennifer Ashley writes is amazing. So if you enjoy books with a tormented hero, a sassy heroine, precious but loveable kids and cameos from all the MacKenzies and McBrides, especially Ian, this is the book for you! But plan on finding a quiet corner where no one can find you because once you start, you will not want to put it down! less
