review 1: Another fabulous read by Jennifer Chiaverini! For all the Civil War era books that I've read, tales of espionage, especially at the peril of women (on either side) is one that I have haven't read much of. The long, anxious months (years really), and the terrible waiting... waiting for the end, for salvation, for Richmond to finally fall, and the suffering of the Union soldiers imprisoned there, dieing sometimes in the hundreds each day, plus the great risk to personal life to those whom sided with the Union cause... was so well described, that I feel that it was a most harrowing time best left to stories, imagination, and great writing talent; so much so, that I almost feel that General Grant liberated me from four long years of spying for the Union cause behind Confeder... moreate lines, while watching the best and worst of humanity swarm around me. I feel exhausted and elated, all at the same time... so I'm headed to the library now for Mrs. Lincoln's Rival, and can't wait to get started!
review 2: l couldn't get into it. This is for the audio version. I think that the narration was "edgy". I only listened to the first disc. I felt like I did when I first saw the movie Gone With the Wind. When they were all jumping on their horses to go fight the Northerners I started crying because I knew how bad it was going to be for the Confederates. (I was in 8th grade,) The characters did not make me want to stay around to hear more about them. less
