review 1: I learned of this poet, William Carlos Williams, through my son, who learned a poem of his in school. I made fun of the poem, but the more I recited it (This is just to say), the more I liked it. Then I forgot about it. One day at the library where I am a clerk, i checked in The River Of Words for a patron who teaches children. The beauty of the illustrations caught my eye. I turned the pages, fell in love, ordered it for myself. This is a great book for children, but I am 56 and I would love to own it as well. Sometimes it takes a children's book to cut to the essence of a person. You don't need a 600 page biography. Do yourself a favor. Take a few minutes, and savor this book. Then share it with a favorite friend, young, or not.
review 2: This book is a wonde... morerful biography of William Carlos Williams, depicting the story of how Williams managed to become a successful doctor while still finding time to create beautiful poetry. Melissa Sweet's illustrations never disappoint, and this book is no exception. She uses creative collages to depict Williams life while also incorporate some of his works of poetry into the story. This would be an excellent non-fiction text to pair with a poetry unit. Students could learn about William Carlos Williams's life, while also studying his poetry. Likewise, there are lessons about following your dreams and having determination that students can learn by reading this book. less
