review 1: Summary and Critique:A beautifully designed book, this could be read ten times and the reader was notice more detail each time. Imbedded in the pages are quote, textures, and borders, on top of the text and corresponding illustrations. Not only is this book beautiful, it tells the story of a famous artist while engaging the reader throughout. When Horace Pippin wins an art contest, he receives his first set of paints. The author uses this moment to explain how Pippin’s style came to be when she says, “He painted everyday scenes in natural colors; then he added a splash of red.” The book also contains predictable patterns, making it accessible for younger readers. An example of this is when Horace is shot. He can no longer paint a picture in response to the requests o... moref those around him as he had done repeatedly throughout the book.. My favorite part of the book is the quote: “If a man knows nothing but hard times, he will paint them, for he must be true to himself.”Classroom use:Because this book is so pictorially rich, I would use it in a lesson to teach the “3 Ways to Read a Book: Pictures, Words, and Retelling.” Students could practice describing the story, before reading the words, solely through describing the picturesGenre: BiographyFormat: Picture BookReading level: Grades 3-5Theme: PerseveranceTopic: Famous artist, WarGender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status:The main character, Horace Pippin, is an African American man. The book mentions the scars of his grandmother's hands from her days as a slave.
review 2: With the loss of arts classes in schools I think a good way to easily slip in some history and art/music appreciation is with picture book biographies of artists and musicians. While a traditional chapter book biography would certainly work for introducing Horace Pippin to students, I think the picture book has a distinct advantage because it uses art to show the life of the artist.Melissa Sweet’s illustrations have a child-like quality to it that is reminiscent of Vera B. Williams. I love this style because it inspires kids, showing them that their art is good enough and has value. That isn’t to imply that these are just some picture she dashed off in class with poor technique, but it feels as if a kid could draw it. I think it is especially relevant and well-suited to this picture book about Horace Pippen because it will encourage children to keep going with their art just as Pippin did. There is a lot here in the story of his life, but the text doesn’t get bogged down with dates and facts. It’s very readable in a way that a lot of biographies are not. I also think the inclusion of just the right amount of detail will encourage kids to look into a few of the historical events that touched Pippin’s life. less
