review 1: I picked it up at the library because the day was really grey and it seemed apropos for November. I thought I'd read one of her books before but none of the titles printed inside seemed familiar... consulted my GR log and what do you know, I've read two of her books and can't remember a darn thing about either. SPOILER... not enough development for me, characters do odd things out of the blue, characters are introduced and then go nowhere, creepy children named Fawn (don't you think she has those big Keane eyes?!) and their creepier dolls named Mimi never pan out to be anything really interesting story-wise or actually creepy and what was Auntie's actual motive again- spurned by her boyfriend??? Anyway too mish mashy for me especially when you tag on the whole end of G ... moreis really kind of some vampire who needs to feed but can pretty much hunker down and make it on cans of tuna. And I'm sorry but if I'd been captured and tied up and gagged for almost a week, I would not be coming home and making muffins or whatever baked goods it was for my kids... Man, I hate it when a book starts out with some promise and then Fonzies big time.
review 2: I don't normally read horror books, but I decided to read this one based on a friend's recommendation. At times, I couldn't read it at night because it freaked me out! It is a really creepy story that switches back and forth between 1908 and present day Vermont. There is a creepy old house (think Alfred Hitchcock Psycho house) out in the middle of nowhere, a creepy rock formation in the woods called the Devil's Hand, a scary old diary, and rumors and disappearances of people that occur in this small town . At the heart of the story is the desire to see loved ones again after they have died. Despite the genre rating of horror, it is not really that gruesome. It is more of a psychological mystery as the reader tries to figure out what really happened. I had a problem with the ending because I don't think the murderer was really explained very well. The motivations for the actions just didn't seem plausible. The author also leaves the ending open for another book. It was definitely a fast paced scary read that I recommend reading with the lights on! less
