review 1: I thought I was going to hate this book. I guess who the killer was the first time he appears in the story and I thought that if it was that easy to figure out, then the book was probably a dud. However, McMahon totally drew me into the story. I was completely enthralled and even though I knew who Neptune was, I kept wanting to read more. Does it deserve 4 stars? Maybe not. (I would give it 3.5 if I could.) It ended up being a lot better than I was expecting.
review 2: This story was told in a way that was unique for me. I wasn't sure how that would play out but I liked it. The book is divided between past and present, not unusual, with excerpts from a "true crime" novel thrown in, (the unique part). The story is Reggie's who was 13 when her mother was taken by
... more a serial killer. It was assumed her mother was killed though her body was never found. Now years later, Reggie receives a call that her mother was found, alive. This brings Reggie back to the town she grew up in, a town she has avoided. We go from Reggie's memories of that the time her mother disappeared, including her search, with 3 friends, for her mother to her mother's return and Reggie dealing with that. The killer has never been caught and with Reggie's mother returning, we find the killer has also returned. Interwoven are excerpts from a book published after her mother disappeared. One that does not paint a pretty picture of her mom but may hold the clues that Reggie needs. The story was well written. It kept me guessing so much that the only thing i was certain of was that Reggie was not the killer. The characters were intriguing. I wavered on how much I liked some of them, much like I do with real people I meet. If you like strange, creepy mysteries I suggest you give this a shot. less
