review 1: Not sure what to say. I loved all of the characters, except Amara, (boring through it all), and yet almost 800 pages later it feels like I didn't spend enough time with the ones I wanted to read about. It was also the same battle scene over and over again. "There is no hope, we are all going to die, the fight is lost." and then the next time we find them, they somehow survive. Over and over again.. I know that I shouldn't compare but, when I and everyone else who read the series with me, finished the Dark Towers, we all said tbe same thing. "I took my time because I didn't want it to end. " not so with this one. Too long to end the war and only one epilog chapter to wrap it all up. Not a very satisfying finale even though Mr. Butcher wraps everything up very nice and neat.... more P.s. mom is right, it is better to read all the books of a series together. Much much easier to remember everything. :)
review 2: *NOTE: Not really my thoughts on this last book, more of an overview of the entire series*I'm going to be honest with you.I believe that reading is an innately subjective experience and that no two people are going to like, or even hate, the same book. That being said, I don't believe that this series deserves all the hate it gets. It's not perfect by any stretch of imagination; believe it or not, I DO have my criticisms despite the high ratings I've given these books. What the series lacks in certain aspects though, it more than makes up for other aspects. Am I contradicting myself here? Yeah, kinda. I hope that made sense. It is what it is I guess!Reading fantasy, especially epic fantasy, can be quite a commitment, requiring extensive time to read and absorb all of the new terminology, world building and characters. Not so with the Codex Alera series! Not only are they super easy to get into, they're also exceptionally quick reads. Between the incredible amount of action and the extremely fast pace of the novels, it's not hard to see why. I honestly don't believe I've read six books this quickly before. SIX. BOOKS. But perhaps the greatest strength of the Codex Alera series is just how uplifting the story is.Yes, it's a conventional coming of age fantasy story in many ways, but the growth isn't restricted to the main character himself. As the series goes on, we delve into the motivations and desires of other characters. And really, there's just so many of them.Characters who are driven by honour, love, greed, political ambition, revenge, even redemption. I thought that the morally ambiguous nature of a lot of the characters added a lot of depth and and intrigue to the story. That's always a good thing, right? There's really not much else to say except that I really enjoyed the shit out of these books. If you want a crazy, action packed and epic story in your life, pick up these books. If you want your blood to essentially be replaced by pure adrenaline, pick up these books. Hell, if you just want a good freaking story, pick up these books!Needless to say, the Codex Alera series will probably go down as one of my favourite fantasy series of all time. less
