review 1: Harry Hole is called back to work,as a policeman from his job teaching in the Police Academy after a string of policemen are murdered followed by a string of murders of family members of policemen. The link seems to be policemen who had worked on cases involving murder and appear to be linked to the new police chief and various relationships he has had or is having. But every clue they track down is wrong and all the hunches they play don't work out. As the case progresses all of them and everyone they are close to is put at risk and Harry finds himself continually struggling. This book is highly recommended but not as an introduction to the series.
review 2: I love Harry Hole. He is such a dark, angst ridden man with many burdens. Spoiler below.I hadn't re
... moread the last book in this series, so wasn't aware of the cliffhanger that was Harry's car crash. Nesbo weaves a tangled web here and at times -- especially listening to the audio book -- it was hard to keep all the characters apart. I think reading the book might have made that less of a challenge.Nesbo seems to rely on more cliffhangers than usual: is Aurora alive (twice!) and is Harry dead (thankfully not) and they had me emotionally engaged even if they were heavy handed and overdone. This is really well written and atmospheric, with interesting and well developed characters. It has been entertaining to see Harry grow and maybe, just maybe, be on the brink of true happiness.I fear for Aurora, though. less
