review 1: This was a solid mystery with action, and an intriguing non-linear narrative. I just have two criticisms. #1: it opened with an explicit sex scene that didn't fit the tone of the rest of the book. There were other sex scenes but not as explicit. It seemed like a cheap gimmick to grab the reader. #2: I think this is a translation issue, but it was really hard to stay in the story whenever the main character was mentioned by name. "I needed Harry Hole!" I might read another book in this series eventually--if I can mature enough to get past the name. ;)
review 2: This is the last Nesbo mystery I will try. The last one I read (The Readbreast) was mediocre and this one was terrible. Nesbo's style was very spare and staccato like and not at all interesting to me. Non... moree of the characters in the book, with the exception of Harry Hole, were not very well developed, and Hole was not interesting or likeable. The storyline had gratuitous gore and was contrived and not believable. Read Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben for a good mystery. less
