review 1: I cannot creatively give this book review any justice! This volume is and will be epic compare to the other volumes especially the pathetic 4th volume! This volume dealt mostly of the origins of the key and what led the downfall of these children's father's high school friends! We learn about this portal that demons can come out and when they don't attach themselves to humans, they turn into metal which in 1775 is what lead to the first magical set of keys. We learn that throughout history, there is a price to pay when discovering these keys in the Locke mansion or making them.I was blown away by the storyline of this volume and could not believe that there was less action involve with the children but I guarantee you that the final volume will be mind blowing with full of ... moreaction. Overall I find it very simple how their father screwed everything up.I feel that common sense when out the door when he wanted to open the door of essentially hell. They knew the consequences and yet still did it. It's like someone giving you a gun, telling you that a gunshot could either harm or kill you if you shoot yourself, and then you are like okay no problem let me shoot myself in the foot just for test run. I have no sympathy for what happen in the aftermath and how they never bothered telling his kids or writing it down what would happen if Dodge came back alive.I have no clue who will survive but I have feeling that the young boy will die. Joe Hill is marvelous, creative, and unique behind his father's shadows. I need the 6th volume now!
review 2: In Joe Hill’s Locke & Key: Clockworks, the second to last volume left us with the knowledge that Bode’s body had been inhabited by Dodge, and with the fear of what he will now be capable of with the trust of the Locke family and the complete access to the house. Hill, understanding pacing perfectly, uses this volume to take a step back and finally reveal the story of Keyhouse, beginning with the first keys, and continuing to the chapters which include the Locke children’s father. They even learn the history of Dodge. These tales within the tale whip and wrap around the present story, giving the reader the much needed why. Current readers need motivation and soul. We cannot believe in a human who is evil for the sake of evil. We need a reason. And here, Hill expertly supplies the reason. In some ways, Hill shows capabilities even beyond his father’s abilities. While I have never read any of Hill’s novels, I have read a few—okay, several—of King’s, and what he does best is story. Dialogue, details, and narrative leave a bit to be desired at times, but he can set his jaw against a plot. Judging by the Locke & Key comics, Hill will give him a great challenge.A great read. If you have not picked one up yet, do so. less

So good, though now that I know the backstory it feels a little less appealing.
