Johannes Cabal
review 1: Johannes Cabal is morally corrupt, unfalteringly arrogant and more of a devil than the Devil himself - and yet...'The Necromancer' is an incomparably strange, wonderfully told tale driven by a character who is inhumane and yet so human. Where there's wretchedness there's wit, where there's discord there's devotion and where there's maleficence there's magic. Howard conjures a callous world of circus carnivals and sits Cabal at its centre; a place where he does not fit but is complimented perfectly. The novel is darkly hilarious, quietly beautiful and painfully underrated. Its quirky prose, ethereal nature and subtle charm where there should be none makes it a pleasure to read (even for the third time!) and the opening chapter will forever make me smile - it had me at h... moreello.
review 2: I went into reading this novel with the idea that I was going for something that could be classified as an 'easy read' and that is exactly what I found. That is not to speak badly to the author or the story but generally it is almost a young adult book. However, the story is very interesting and where it differs from most young adult novels is that it is never corny and is very clever. The moments of dark humor are great surprises that had me laughing out loud and I loved that the book didn't try to do a 180 at the end to force a moral concept down my throat. The lead character of Johannes Cabal is a dark and mysterious anti-hero that kept me guessing, which unusually was explained on the last page of the book in a fascinating twist that was nothing short of brilliant. The story is difficult to review without giving spoilers which I definitely do not want to do so I will just say that at 3 stars this is a should read but not quite a must read(im pretty stingy with my stars). It did what I wanted as far as physically encouraging me to start reading more and I have to admit that I had a lot of fun reading it. Not all books should be patience marathons. You gotta switch it up with something not on your normal shelf. A necromancer who has a bet with satan to sign over 100 souls in a year with a traveling circus definitely qualifies for not on my normal shelf. less
