review 1: The casual disdain with which Johannes Cabal treats the world and people around him always manages to bring some joy to my life. This short story was no exception. Of all the short stories for this character that Howard has published, this one is by far my favorite. Cabal, not yet a necromancer of some little infamy, decides to investigate a strange death at a theater and ends up facing a murderous ghost, eldritch machineries, and worse - an acting career. The very first tale in the Cabal continuity, readers and theater-goers alike can hope to enjoy Cabal's caustic wit as Howard presents it here.
review 2: I thought this was yet another wonderful Johannes Cabal story, but my only complaint would be that 80% of the story was told by Johannes. Not that I didn't
... morelike the idea, but sometimes, it got to be a bit heavy and dry and difficult to read. Still, it was a great story, and I really enjoyed reading it. And I genuinely loved the way Johannes invited Parkin to come hang out, have a few drinks, and spend some time just talking. I loved the humanness this added to Cabal's character, that even a misanthrope like him wanted someone to talk to on Christmas Eve. Normally I find Christmas stories about how "everyone needs a friend at Christmas" to be unbearably cheesy (and I'm sure Cabal would agree with me on that point), but I thought this was just the right amount of "awww!" (And may I just say I was a bit concerned to learn that this was going to be a Christmas story. Generally speaking, "Johannes Cabal" and "Christmas Eve" seem like they would clash, but this story was just right). less

Ah, some backstory on Herr Cabal! Nice! I really love this story-line, and all of it's offshoots.

Interesting concept and entertaining to read. I always enjoy the framing technique.
