Johannes Cabal
review 1: I like the concept of Johannes Cabal. He's a funny character, with not a lot of empathy, and he does what he wants when he wants to do it, which is fine. The story of Johannes moves from him standing his ground as a necromancer, but also trying to figure out what is happening on the flying ship he is aboard. So, there is an element of steampunk present as well (the soup du jour of sub SF genre). My only problem with this book was that it tended to drag a little bit here and there. A lot of detail and happenings with not a ton of payoff. Ultimately that is fine with me, but after the first Johannes Cabal book, which was pleasant in so many ways, this one missed the mark in a couple of areas. I'll read the next one because I feel invested in the character, but I would... more hope for some more excitement and that crazy Johannes making deals with satan story line.
review 2: Not quite as amazing as the original Johannes Cabal tale, but nonetheless, a great read. The main character is just about the best recurring character going in modern literature. A seemingly soulless, heartless creature who continues to show unexpected signs of...well, soul and heart. And funny, too. The dry, arch sense of humor is another reason I keep coming back to these stories (3 novels and at least three short stories that I'm aware of). Start with the Necromancer, but keep going with this one, and definitely continue on to the Fear Institute, they are all worth your time. And possibly a re-read every now and then when you need a good, evil laugh. less

Good, a little steampunky and not as dark as the first one. So far the weakest of the series

Enjoyable, but it's missing everything that made me love the first book.

The first one is a little more fun, but I liked this one too.
