review 1: I have enjoyed nearly every one of Rain's stories that I have read and this one was no exception. Jim Knighthorse, a former rising star in football is sidelined by a terrible injury and goes on to become a private investigator. He is hired to find an animal rights activist who has disappeared by the man's girlfriend. The investigation takes him into some ugly, uncomfortable and foreign waters.A second investigation involves a flasher plaguing a retirement community. Jim is hired to investigate and find out who the cuplrit is.At the same time, his investigation into his own mother's death seems to be coming to a finish, the evidence clarifying matters having been found at the bottom of a box.I think the things I like best about this series are that the characters are comp... morelex, Knighthorse being a flawed hero sort; that despite the fact that the subjects of the books deal with the darker parts of life, they still contain humor; and that justice is being sought for those who can not obtain it by themselves.
review 2: I was going to give this 4 stars as I don't give 5 stars lightly but when I thought about what was wrong with the book I realised there was nothing wrong with it. It's not as funny as the previous two but considering the subject matter this is not surprising. The main investigation concerns the practice of shark fin fishing and it's obvious where J R Rain stands on this. The secondary investigation is more personal as it concerns the murder of his mother and it is this that helped me decide on the 5 stars. I have read series of books where the central issue has been dragged on until the author decides to kill of their hero thus tying up any loose ends. So now his mother's murder is solved, what next for Jim Knighthorse? The thing is that he seems to be a simple character but you know that's just not true. Therefore I have no worries that there will be more angst in store for this PI and that he will deal with it with the diligence and wit we have seen in the first three books. less
