review 1: I liked the characters. They were fully developed and strong well rounded characters. The story elements were interesting and idealistic. And there lies the one problem I had this with story. As much as I wanted to just go with the flow of the story, the nagging voice in the back of my head kept saying this was in no way plausible even with creative license. There are certain boundaries that can't be crossed. I couldn't believe the blue blooded women would pose for the playing cards -- it smacks of trade and beneath them. Not even the lure of marriage to Jonathan would be enough especially since he lacked a sufficient title. Tommy's character while I loved her also overcame too much to be believable. Her childhood got kitchen-sinked and she was still an illegitima... morete daughter of a courtesan that her current position that she enjoyed was also hard to swallow. I think with too many improbabilities in one story hindered my enjoyment of the novel even though I do like the ideas the author was going for and I agree with the sentiment. However, the sentiment is not enough for me to be able to accept all the historical implausibilities that littered this work.
review 2: This is a really sweet book from the point of view of the developing friendship between Tommy and Jonathan, and the fact that they didn't live in each others' pockets for the whole book. The plot around rescuing children seemed familiar from other books in the genre to the point where I had to remind myself that it wasn't possible to have read this book before. But I think the book really hit its stride from about a third of the way in and just kept getting better. Hurrah for a couple of characters who were determined to earn their way in life. less
