review 1: Wat een ontdekking deze schrijver. Prachtige zinnen, zonder opsmuk en schaamteloos. "Ik sloeg de krant dicht en we praatten, het liep goed af, dat kleine zwarte vlekje in mijn hart was nauwelijks merkbaar, de vage wens om alleen te zijn en rustig te lezen zonder dat iemand iets van me vergde, verdween snel. Maar toen kwam het punt waarop het niet meer verdween, integendeel, het begon onderdeel uit te maken van de erop volgende situaties en handelingen. Als je werkelijk van me houdt, moet je geen eisen aan me stellen dacht ik, maar ik zei het niet, ik wilde dat ze te zelf achter zou komen.
review 2: In the second of the six-part novel about his life, Knausgaard writes about moving to Sweden from Norway and about starting a family. His details are selective and y... moreet it seems he leaves nothing out. The approach can be hypnotic."I paid, he put the book in a little bag and handed it to me with the receipt, which I shoved into my back pocket before opening the door and leaving with the bag dangling from my hand. Outside it was raining. I stopped, took off the knapsack, stuffed the bag in it, put the knapsack back on, and continued along the brightly illuminated shopping street, where the snow that had been falling for several hours had left no trace other than ..." I like seeing all that, but such a style is not for every reader. Since this volume was often about child rearing, I had to remind myself that it wasn't a handbook with bad advice but just an honest description of his experiences and opinions. If I disagree with some ideas, it's not the point -- and I can see that he loves his children.I do hope as the books progress, he gets closer to being the "good" person he longs to be in addition to writing the way he believes it's important to write. less
