review 1: Fabulous ideas let down by uneven prose, pacing, and characterisation. Griffin has devised a scheme of magic that is both rooted in mythological and contemporary ideas, and yet still fresh and evocative.Even better, her idea of magic is set in a description of London that is simply wonderful.Unfortunately, her prose sometimes waxes purple; the book's pacing is sometimes slow; and her characters are relatively flat. I am rather looking forward to more of one character in the sequel— the elite assassin Oda, who serves as a menacing temporary ally to the protagonist for most of the book. I don't really care about any of the other characters. One may reasonably argue that the star of this book isn't the protagonist. Rather, the book may be seen as a romance of sorts between a... moren imaginary London rooted in reality, and Griffin's description of magic, with the characters of the book acting almost as supporting characters. If that sounds appealing, this book may be just right for you.
review 2: I thought the premise of this book was interesting. The world building was good, and the author stayed away from a lot of the typical urban fantasy pitfalls.I found it really boring though, and too verbose. Because it's so wordy I felt like the plot moved both too slowly AND too quickly. I had to force myself to finish the book, and I won't be reading the sequels, which is too bad because I had high hopes for this book. Also, way too many dudes. less

Couldn't read it - too much description, nothing happening.
