review 1: A new favorite. Being a thoroughly a city person myself I found the concept of a city's magic wonderfully fresh and original. Other than the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher (which I love!) I haven't read much urban fantasy. But if I compare, Griffin's magical world seems to be less structured (well, at least after the first book) than Butcher's, and also a bit less extreme (a good thing in my opinion). The main character Matthew Swift (with and without the blue electric angels) is also super intriguing, many-layered and real. Definitely going to continue reading these books (as soon as I've finished the new Dresden novel, Skin Game).
review 2: Loved it! It's definitely not an easy read in the way that the Dresden files or Alex Versus is. This is urban fant
... moreasy getting down to it's roots - not just magic beings living in a city but using the city as a source for their magic. The little odes to traditional city life - The Bag Lady, The Beggar King are nice touches. Just realistic enough to be believable characters but enough fantasy about them to know they're a legend, a mythical stereotype. I loved the idea of the blue electric angels - a higher being for the digital age. The switch between first and third person narrative is confusing at first but you soon catch on that some things are Matthew related and others are Angel related. I can't wait to read the next one in the series! less
