review 1: Considering the over-saturated with vampires media, and therefore my natural aversion of yet another vampire-themed novel/movie/tv series, I actually enjoyed this book. The portrayal of the Dark Ones as soulless immortal beings, without all the Hollywood crap about their super-powers, was rather refreshing and sat well with me. The main protagonist - Pia, is an overall nice person, if a little gullible and, at moments, a bit irritating with her perpetual self-deprecation and insecurities. What I found most irritating about her, however, was how she would hold on to the idea of Alec and her being "rightfully bonded", despite all evidence screaming in favour of Kristoff. Wasn't that silly? She barely made out with Alec once, then throughout the entire book she was displaying... more every sign of infatuation with Kristoff, including their special metaphysical bond, which quite obviously pointed at her being his Beloved, rather than Alec's...but no. Her guilt-ridden mind would torment her and the readers, respectively. Her "betrayal of Alec" monologues urged me to practically scream some sense into her. Kristoff, on the other hand, is the most interesting character - not only because of his cliched "dark-and-coarse-but-actually-nice-deep-down" role, but because those snarky remarks and biting exchanges between Pia and him constitute for all that makes this book worthy of reading. The Brotherhood and its members' overzealous manners made me think of the Catholic church references in Dan Brown's novels. I enjoyed Katie MacAlister's way with words, her witty and intelligent expressions and metaphors, her sense of humor. It's a good thing I discovered the book now, as I was able to immediately continue reading the story's sequel, otherwise I would have been very annoyed at the unfinished ending of this one.
