review 1: Not bad. I read the first two volumes of the previous Young Avengers series and generally like the team. This really shouldn't be Volume 1 though. Or, at the very least, a summary of previous storylines relevant to this volume and maybe capsule bios of the cast would have been nice. As it is, the story relies quite heavily on previous continuity, which really should be unacceptable in something touted as "Volume 1." So apparently Loki's a teenager now? To be fair, this was probably just as confusing to readers picking up issue #1 of the comic book expecting a fresh start and instead finding part x of a continuing story where x is definitely greater than one. Confusion aside, I like this book. The characters are fun and it has style to burn. I just wish it was more n... moreewbie-friendly.
review 2: Parents just don't understand. Especially when they've been taken over by an extra-dimensional being.Cute, but seems to be trying to hard to be hip and relevant; reads like an old person who uses teenage lingo to awkward and embarrassing effect. Clearly an origin story, but a little too disjoint, and the over-cute dialogue puts too much emotional distance between the reader and characters. The character interactions felt like actors who were too focused on blocking and director's notes to really act. (Yes. I've been in a play lately and wanted to use my new theater geek verbiage.)But...interesting enough to whet my appetite for the next volume. Plus, Kid Loki is still adorable, tricksy and conflicted. less
