Young Avengers Vol. II
review 1: This volume definitely improves on the last; while I enjoyed the first volume, it naturally suffers from the problems that most first volumes have, which is throwing a bunch of stuff at you so that the story gets started. This one, on the other hand, is a bit more leisurely, and allows for more development. I really liked Prodigy and Speed, and I'm excited to see what will happen with them. There's a lot of little humorous gems sprinkled throughout this one, too. I have to say, though, more Kate Bishop always and forever.
review 2: So it turns out YOUNG AVENGERS is one big story, and here's the sort-of mushy second act. I love McKelvie's figures and expressions, but his action has always been pretty inert, so it doesn't help when Kate Brown does a fill-in issu
... moree and seems much more suited to action, as well as having expressive characters. There's also a weird effect in a few issues where the characters are supposed to have soot or dust on their faces, but it only looks like thumbprint ink smudges or maybe the spraypaint tool in MS Paint. Not sure whether to pin that on McKelvie or colorist Matthew Wilson, but it was a distraction. There are still some nice visuals, like Miss America's method of traveling dimensions, or the living borders of Mother's home dimension. The story's not much (basically the Young Avengers run around some alternate dimensions and set up stuff for the final arc), but the details are fun, like a page depicting months of time through a series of Instagram photos. Kid Loki's a tough character a handle and Gillen does a good job, since he's likable even though he's clearly lying and manipulating everyone non-stop. It's also nice that SOMEONE at Marvel actually read the original Morrison/Jones MARVEL BOY series, so Noh-Varr at least has some consistency with his first appearance. Pretty good stuff, but a lot depends on the last volume's capacity to stick the landing. less

Fun but not as gripping as the first volume. Felt like a very In between book.
