Young Avengers Vol. II
review 2: I absolutely loved Kieron Gillen's recent runs of Journey Into Mystery & Thor, which included Loki being reincarnated as a young teen. It completely s
... morehook up the dynamic between the brothers and reinvented Loki in a new and fun way. So, when I saw that the character would become part of the new run of Young Avengers, I didn't hesitate to buy the first volume.Happily, Loki doesn't disappoint. He's still the mischievous trickster from mythology and comic canon, but readers are kept wondering whether he's on the side of good, evil or just himself. We learn that these young heroes used to fight for good, but stopped being heroes when some of their friends were killed. Loki uses his reputation for lying to his advantage to manipulate them into uniting as a new team. Supposedly, his motivation is to correct a spell cast by Wiccan that has gone horribly wrong. But, Loki has never been one for altruism. While I loved Loki, I did have some problems with this series. First, this team is introduced quickly and with almost no background. (Which could also be said of Loki, if readers have not read JiM). Second, I wasn't sure which "reality" this was taking place in, as "Earth-212" is name-dropped in contrast to "Earth-Earth." Being a newbie to comics, this was problematic. Third, I don't like half of these so-called heroes. Miss America (female Captain America who can fly) is the biggest problem - frankly, she's mean. Wiccan (the son of Scarlet Witch, same powers) and his boyfriend Hulkling (a skrull?) they whine a lot. I did like the remaining two: Noh-Varr (Marvel Boy/Protector, only now young for some reason) and Kate Bishop (a female Hawkeye). They are more charismatic and upbeat, and I hope they get more screen time.I think some of these issues will be resolved in the next volume as, hopefully, the authors include more context and character development. Overall, this book is definitely worth reading for fans of Loki, and I think the other heroes have the potential to grow on me. Recommended. less

Despite the name, this book has plenty of both style and substance. Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie approached their run on Young Avengers as a metaphor. It's the experience of being 18, through the lens of superheroes. This means there's a lot of fun stuff going on. The dialogue is sharp and clever, and each character has a distinct personality. The art is just as sharp; McKelvie's great at capturing expressions. There's also at least one awesomely creative layout in each issue. This book is very much of the time. Its critics often accuse it of "pandering to Tumblr," but where they see it as a bad sign, I see it as a bit of a plus. This is a comic about teenage superheroes - pop culture references make sense. And it's all just a lot of fun. I loved this series.

I really wish there was a way to give half stars on here. I feel like I've been giving out a ton of four stars lately. But what I really want to do is give this and others three and a half stars and I feel like I'm cheating them if I only give them three stars. So four stars it is.Anyways, about the actual book. I'm really liking the team so far. Also, there were some really well done spreads in this volume. Definitely continuing this one.
