A Tea Shop Mystery
review 1: The books in this series are a quick read. I enjoy the descriptions of Charleston, South Carolina and one can learn a thing or two about the tea business. I have read 6 or 7 of them. The plot of each seems somewhat formulated and it is fairly easy to guess who the murderer is. The main character is a very shallow and self centered person. I much prefer a more complicated lead character such as National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon from the Nevada Barr series. However, the Tea Shop Mysteries do provide some humor and sometimes a bit of southern charm.
review 2: My daughter and I started reading the "Tea Shop Mystery" series years ago. This is the 13th book I've read. Many times an author will start out with a great series and by book 13 it's gotten worn: the characte
... morers aren't as interesting or in depth as they once were, the stories aren't quite as well written as earlier ones and the plots are nothing new, just the setting changess--this is not the case with Laura Childs's series. I always learn a bit more about tea while reading and I usually wind up sipping a cup of tea while I read. Theodosia is a wonderful main character. As in the other books, a murder is committed--this time at the opening of a Charleston aquarium and not just any murder--the victim was Theodosia's former boyfriend, Parker. I like that I can not easily figure out the murderer (as I often do in other mysteries) until shortly before or at the revelation in the end. I always find the Tea Shop Mysteries a delightful read and feel as if I'm getting back together with old friends. I recommend starting at the beginning with Death by Darjeeling since characters are introduced as you work your way through book by book. If you don't want to wait to read this one, it can be a stand alone book with enough explanations given to make the new reader comfortable with characters and relationships but not too detailed to bore or irritate long time readers of the series. The recipes at the end are always a highlight and I already know what ones I'm going to try very soon. less
