review 1: There were so many times I nearly stopped reading this - but somehow I finished it and my head is teeming with conflicting thoughts and feelings. This is one of those books that became really uncomfortable to read because it hit too close to home. It is so strange that I am giving it 4 stars when I actually didn't enjoy the experience of reading it, but I had to give props to Laura Lee Guhrke for the character of Sebastian - one of the most realistic characters I have read yet.I wanted to read a light-hearted, funny HR and although parts of this was funny - especially the first time Daisy went to Sebastian's home and he tried to make her leave - for me it wasn't light-hearted at all. Although I have never had a drug problem, I understand addiction very well.Sebastian's fea... morers, motivation and his entire trajectory of life were so real to me and I saw so many parallels to things I have experienced it is quite unsettling. I am not a writer by any means but we all do tasks in our life that require approval from our peers and/or the public and sometimes that can slowly eat away at our motivation and what we originally did with carefree abandon and passion may become tainted by the stress and pressure, and eventually, instead of enjoyment it becomes torture. I suppose some may think Sebastian is melodramatic, but that is really just the way some people are. Yes it is a flaw, and can deteriorate into a fatal one and I applaud the way she wrote Sebastian and how he came back from the very edge of despair. When you have sunk so deep into that mire of self-disgust and shame and incompetence and ennui you really do need something drastic to wake you up from it.Most of the book is about how Sebastian re-embraces writing with the help of Daisy, and their romance. To be honest, it is the first time reading a HR that the romance wasn't the focus of my attention. I liked Daisy and I admire her enthusiasm and optimism and I envy her for it, but she doesn't really change throughout the novel, but merely acts as the sounding board for Sebastian; and the characters know this - which is awesome because just like Sebastian says towards the end, he DOESN'T need a crutch to write, that strength to continue and march forward was within himself, but at the same time, he found something that was just as important if not more for his happiness. I appreciate that the point was that he needed to overcome his own fears and in the process and along with it embrace love.I think pessimists and cynics are in a sense very stubborn people. Once their first ideals are lost, they stick vehemently to the belief that there is no lasting love, everyone is mercurial ect ect. The biggest obstacle to their happiness is within themselves and I liked that this came across in this book. Like I said, I didn't enjoy this book but I don't regret reading it and I am interested in what I would think about it when I am older. I think the way one experiences a book will change depending on your outlook in life and I look forward to experiencing this book again.
review 2: "It was okay."And I mean that in the most positive way possible. It was okay! There was nothing about it that really got me excited but there was also nothing about it that bummed me out. This is probably the most neutral I've been in a book all year, but I don't mean anything bad by that.I'm not even sure I have anything more to say than just that. This book is pretty okay! I have nothing bad to say about it. It was okay! The end! less
