review 2: LLG, you soothe my soul.Let me preface this review with saying that this is actually a 4.5 rating and Goodreads if you are
... morereading this, please consider doing something about that for your neurotic reviewers! Now, where was I? Oh yes, about to extoll all sorts of lovely praise on LLG. She turned my reading frown upside down. I have been so unmotivated to read as of late and was so unimpressed by Insurgent that I knew I had to go back to my one true love- historical romance. Thank goodness there was an LLG book (or two) waiting for me on my TBR shelf! This story of Philip, Marquess of Kayne and Maria Martingale, pastry chef of the first water has a discreet tie-in to others I've read by LLG. Always nice to have old characters pop up and let you know they're doing fine in their HEAs.Although Philip and Maria have known each other since they were children, they've had a rough time of it as adults. Philip inherited his father's title rather young and with the weight of responsibility bearing down on him, he had to distance himself from fresh-from-school, pretty-as-a-picture Maria. He knew their paths would never intertwine with the social chasm that lay between them. This did not seem to be an issue for Lawrence, his brother and soon scandal was about to break over the house of Kayne when Lawrence and Maria planned an elopement. Philip stepped in and broke Maria's heart as well as any friendly feelings she held for him.More than a decade later, Maria has recovered and is about to achieve her dream of opening her own patisserie in London. After finding the perfect location in prime shopping area, Maria snatches it up only to find out that Philip is her next-door neighbor! As arrogant as ever, he intrudes upon Maria constantly. For Maria, it's like a fly she can't swat away but Philip has more personal, ulterior motives to hover so close...LLG weaves such a beautiful, authentic past between the Hawthornes and Maria. You find yourself whisked back to that willow tree like it's a memory of your own. I found the characters balanced in their personality- Philip was not too stuffy for me and Maria not too defiant. They balanced one another like the lightest whipped cream complements a deep-dark chocolate torte. Needless to say, this made the love scenes some of the best I've read and the ending especially poignant. It did not drag or fizzle out- major applause considering the feat that is in the romance writing world!I'm very excited to go back into my hermit reading cycles so long as another LLG book is lying around in wait! less
