review 1: The 2nd in Modesitt Jr's Imager series, this book follows directly on from where we last left our main character in the first book, Rhenn having saved the day once, now has to deal with the consequences of his success, as if having a new job to do was enough to do he also has to deal with a grudge which while caused in the first book, never really saw anything happen with it until now, and it begins escalating in a large way, along with assassination attempts, trying to stay on his girlfriends good side, and trying to keep any actions he does take from upsetting too many people hes got his work cut out for him. The books very solid with plenty of action in it, the magic system while not expanded greatly for Rhenn in particular from the abilities he developed in the first b... moreook, these are refined somewhat, and he begins to see new uses for imaging skills and how it could be applied for himself.Overall the book carries on well from its predecessor and is exactly what ud expect from a middle of a trilogy kinda book.
review 2: Substantially better than the 1st book in this series, Faster pace and doesn't drag on in places like the previous book tended to do and in addition does fill out more of the storyline's plot.Yet, the author tends to like writing about and putting great importance throughout the story on what various wines the characters consume, making them all seem like border-line alcoholics. Now onto the 3rd volume to read the conclusion... less
